5% Day at Whole Foods Market Harbor East to Benefit Exeter Gardens

Like more than 24 million fellow Americans, the residents of Baltimore’s Jonestown community live in an urban ‘food desert’ where low-income families have little or no access to affordable, healthy food. On Thursday, June 28th, shoppers at Whole Foods Market Harbor East will have the chance to make a major contribution to the fight against food deserts. Thanks to Whole Foods Market’s quarterly 5 percent giving day program, five percent of net sales will be donated to the Exeter Gardens project—an effort to turn a local derelict lot into a thriving food farm, an oasis in the urban food desert.

Urban-renewal and green-space advocate Hasdai Westbrook, project director for Exeter Gardens, said, “There are over 14,000 vacant lots and dozens of food deserts in Baltimore. We’re building Exeter Gardens to make sure this lot and this community isn’t one of them. A special thanks to Whole Foods Market for leading the official launch of our funding drive.”

WPM Real Estate Group and Mahan Rykiel Associates, an award winning landscape architectural firm are donating their time and services to design and build Exeter Gardens. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall.
